Such individuals are portrayed as agents of foreign powers or as people whose motives are suspect and potentially harmful to the nation. During the early 1990s, the promotion of ethnocentric stereotypes in the Greek press helped such political views gain legitimacy in the eyes of the public, especially in northern Greece (see Panagiotopoulou, 1996; Triandafyllidou and Mikrakis, 1998).

Cervenkovski government, openly expressing its expectations that after Macedonian elections, its namesake in Skopje, VMRO-DPMNU, would overnight reject every kind of hesitation and prejudice toward Bulgaria, including possible moves toward reunification. Of course, these unrealistic expectations were not met, but such immature tactics created many problems for VMRO-DPMNU. VMRO's heavy influence upon Bulgaria's foreign policy has been one of the principal factors that led to the stagnation in Bulgarian-Macedonian relations during most of the 1990s.
