The nucleus extends into a spindle shape, and microtubules pass into it through polar gaps. There are no obvious MTOCs at the poles, and the main part of the nuclear envelope remains Figure 14. Part of an anaphase nucleus of Amp hidinium carterae (Dinophyceae), showing cytoplasmic microtubules passing through a tunnel to the walls of which the small chromosomes are attached.

In some cases the pyrenoid is traversed by thylakoids which are unusually sinuous in Chrysococcus cordiformis (Belcher and Swale, 1972a), but in Phaeaster (Belcher and Swale, 1971) and Chrysamoeba (Hibberd, 1971) the pyrenoid is penetrated by imaginations of the periplastidial space. Most members of the class have an eyespot which consists of a single layer of pigmented droplets situated at the anterior edge of a chloroplast (Figures 3 and 4). Frequently there is a depression over the eyespot associated with the flagellar swelling.

One cannot leave the subject of flagella without mentioning the unique appendage called the haptonema. This bears a resemblance to the flagellum in its location and size, but its construction is quite different and relatively primitive. Could it be an example of an earlier type of flagellum that has survived? To draw phylogenetic conclusions from this assemblage of flagellar structural details is not easy. The present situation seems to represent mainly divergent lines with few indications of an earlier common ancestry (Figure 9).
