Walker’s siblings and others who moved north in search of opportunity could reasonably expect to do better than their fathers had done. The beginning of the end of the Jim Crow era happened on December 1, 1955, when a woman named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus to a white passenger. Though transportation companies generally did not run two separate buses, 51 Alice Walker: The Color Purple and Other Works they did enforce distinct seating areas within a single vehicle, with blacks riding in the back.

Some mystery surrounds Smith’s death: Undoubtedly, she was in a serious car accident in 1937, but questions surround her treatment.
