Example text

Heider began his chapter on the naïve analysis of action, which laid the foundations of the subject known as attribution theory, with this statement: ‘It is an important principle of common-sense psychology, as it is of scientific theory in general, that man grasps reality, and can predict and control it, by referring transient and variable behaviour to relatively unchanging underlying conditions, the so-called dispositional properties of his world’ (p. 79). This statement implies a belief that the main activities of human beings are grasping, predicting, and controlling reality, and that ordinary people strive to do this in ways that are basically like those of scientists.

Before I put off people who might find things of interest and relevance in this book, let me highlight the topic of causal attribution, because part of the purpose of this book is to propose a fundamental and radical alternative approach to causal attribution as a replacement for the one that has held sway since the publication of Heider’s book (1958). The negative side of this is that many important things that Heider said about causal attribution are wrong. People are not naïve scientists. The internal/external distinction is not basic to causal attribution.

For instance, the skills of piano playing could be described in terms of ‘knowing that’—knowing that this note is middle C, that hitting it just so hard makes just so loud a sound, that a crotchet is twice as long as a quaver, and so on. But although this could work as a (laboured) description, knowing how to play the piano is arguably a different type of thing from its possible complete description in terms of ‘knowing that’. So it may be for psychological metaphysics: it is like the most basic operating guide to reality, the knowing how of the construction of reality in perception, inference, and so forth.
